Sump and sewage pumps are the two pieces of equipment in a home most likely to be discovered failed at exactly the wrong moment, because nothing about a dead pump is visible until water is rising. They sit in a pit, they run when nobody is watching, and they fail silently.
We install and replace both, and we would rather set one up properly now than pump out a finished basement later.
The difference, briefly
- A sump pump moves groundwater. It sits in a pit below the slab and pushes water that collects around the foundation out and away from the house. It is a water-management device.
- A sewage ejector moves waste. It sits in a sealed, vented basin and lifts waste from a below-grade bathroom or laundry up to the sewer main. It is a drainage device, and it is not interchangeable with a sump pump.
- A backup matters more than the brand. A battery backup or water-powered backup keeps a sump running through the storm that knocked the power out — which is precisely when you need it.

How to test yours in one minute
Pour a five-gallon bucket of water slowly into the sump pit and watch. The float should rise, the pump should kick on, the water should drop, and the pump should shut off cleanly without short-cycling. If it hums without pumping, runs continuously, or does not start at all, it needs attention now rather than during the next storm.
While you are down there, walk outside and check where the discharge actually ends. A surprising number of sump discharge lines terminate two feet from the foundation, which just recycles the same water back into the pit. Getting the discharge properly away from the house is often the highest-value part of the job.
Why this matters here
The combination of mountain terrain, real rainfall and a housing stock full of basements and crawlspaces means groundwater management is not optional in much of this area. Homes on sloped lots frequently take on water from uphill during heavy rain, and that water has to be managed rather than resisted. A correctly sized pump with a working backup and a sane discharge run is what stands between that and a finished basement full of water.
Common questions
How long does a sump pump last?
Typically seven to ten years, though a pump cycling constantly on a wet lot can wear out considerably faster. If yours is near that age and you have never tested it, test it.
Do I need a battery backup?
If your basement is finished, or if losing it would be genuinely expensive, yes. Power outages and heavy storms arrive together, which is exactly when a mains-only pump stops being useful.
My pump runs constantly. Is that bad?
It is worth diagnosing. It can mean a stuck float, an undersized pump, a check valve letting discharge fall back into the pit, or a genuine groundwater problem. Continuous running will shorten its life quickly.
Can a sump pump handle a basement bathroom?
No. Waste needs a sealed, vented sewage ejector basin. Running waste to a sump pit is both a code violation and a serious sanitation problem.
